 ___________

"Oran, 1940. Dr. Rieux has to fight against an epidemic of plague that forces the authorities to close the doors of the city, which is trapped by misfortune. Dr. Rieux fights with all his strength against the evil, refuses any metaphysical justification for this calamity, unlike Father Paneloux, who sees in the plague a divine curse, a punishment for human sins.

This allegorical novel has several interpretations. The plague symbolizes the scourge of misfortune in all its forms, including that of war. To fight against the plague, however perilous, however uncertain, however futile this fight may be, is the only possible human conduct. Man must overcome the absurdity of his behavior and of evil, by an act of protest that allows him to join others "in the only certainties they have in common, which are love, suffering, exile.

Camus distinguishes three possible stages for the man who experiences the absurd: the everyday man lives the absurd without being clearly aware of it, like Meursault, the hero of The Stranger, at the beginning of the novel; the absurd man has fully understood the absurd and assumes it, like the same Meursault at the end of the novel; the revolted man is able to build his life on the absurd.

The plague was published in 1947."
