The Dutch Painters - 100 Seventeenth Century Masters

Rembrandt and Vermeer are the names most often quoted as Old Masters; Frans Hals's Laughing Cavalier and Meyndert Hobbema's Avenue at Middleharnis are known to most people interested in art. But the Dutch of the seventeenth century were the most prolific painters of all time, and this superb encyclopedia places the great talents of Rembrandt, Hals and Vermeer in the context of the dozens of lesser masters like Ruisdael, Cuyp, Metsu and Terborch— indeed, some of the works of these artists are reproduced here for the first time in colour.

The introduction traces the history of Netherlandish painting, leading up to the burst of creativity at the time when the Dutch became independent of Spanish domination. Each centre of activity is described in detail, and the relationships between the artists are explained.

The introduction is followed by the main section of the book, an alphabetical guide to more than a hundred of the creative geniuses of the Dutch school, giving biographical details, an analysis of the artist's style, and an assessment of his influence. In each case there is at least one exquisitely reproduced example in full colour, including a full descriptive caption and a history of the painting. A unique feature of this book 1s a complete list of all public collections, large and small, where genuine examples of each artist's work can be found.

The book is completed by a full bibliography which enables the reader to pursue his study of the artists who interest him, and a unique and useful analytical guide to the main collections of Dutch pictures.
